Trama:
Sicilia, anni Ottanta. È guerra aperta fra le cosche mafiose: i Corleonesi, capitanati da Totò Riina, sono intenti a far fuori le vecchie famiglie. Mentre il numero dei morti ammazzati sale come un contatore impazzito, Tommaso Buscetta, capo della Cosa Nostra vecchio stile, è rifugiato in Brasile, dove la polizia federale lo stana e lo riconsegna allo Stato italiano. Ad aspettarlo c’è il giudice Giovanni Falcone che vuole da lui una testimonianza indispensabile per smontare l’apparato criminale mafioso. E Buscetta decide di diventare “la prima gola profonda della mafia”. Il suo diretto avversario (almeno fino alla strage di Capaci) non è però Riina ma Pippo Calò, che è “passato al nemico” e non ha protetto i figli di Don Masino durante la sua assenza: è lui, secondo Buscetta, il vero traditore di questa storia di crimine e coscienza che ha segnato la Storia d’Italia e resta un dilemma etico senza univoca soluzione.
Marco Bellocchio è uno dei pochi registi che ancora tengono in pugno il grande schermo, con una consapevolezza profonda del vissuto cinematografico internazionale e un comando totale della propria visione personale.
Il che è evidente fin dalla prima scena de Il traditore: una festa di famiglia (e di Famiglia) che contiene in sé tanto Il gattopardo quanto Il padrino, e un prologo che enuclea tutta la vicenda a seguire, a cominciare da quella conga che è un cordone ombelicale pronto a stringersi ad ogni giro di danza. Ed è una premonizione anche lo sguardo malinconico di Tommaso Buscetta (un magistrale Pierfrancesco Favino) che vede fuori dalla finestra il figlio Benedetto (solo di nome), tallone d’Achille del padre e simbolo della sua sconfitta.
Il traditore è un film doppio fin dal titolo, perché il tradimento è tale dal punto di vista di Cosa Nostra, ma non lo è dal punto di vista del riscatto umano del “primo pentito”. La doppia lettura è intrinseca alla vicenda di Buscetta, per alcuni un eroe, per altri un infame, un opportunista di comodo ma anche una cartina di tornasole dell’ipocrisia del sistema di giustizia.
La manifestazione visibile di questo doppio registro è la continua alternanza nel film fra un dentro e un fuori: l’interno e l’esterno delle case, il crimine organizzato in cui si è catapultati da bambini e da cui non si esce veramente mai, il carcere e la libertà (vigliata, condizionata, comunque impermanente), le auto americane con il tettuccio che “si apre e si chiude”, la palla dentro o fuori in una partita di calcio guardata da italiani usciti dal loro Paese con l’eterno sogno di rientrarci.
Sono doppi i fantasmi e le visioni che, come sempre nel cinema di Bellocchio, visitano i viventi come un memento mori. Ed è doppia la percezione stessa della morte, perché ogni membro di Cosa Nostra (come ogni essere umano) è un morituro, e ciò che fa la differenza è solo la consapevolezza con cui Giovanni Falcone sa che la fine arriverà per tutti, anche la mafia stessa. Buscetta è già elemento di cesura fra una criminalità antica e una nuova, con un codice d’onore più elastico e una minore lealtà alla famiglia. “Alla fine si muore e basta” quando nel Grande Gioco delle Sedie perdi il posto, perché la morte, come la mafia, “sa aspettare” il momento giusto per far tornare i suoi conti.
Quel che di certo ha raggiunto la fine di un suo ciclo di vita è il gangster movie, di cui Bellocchio certifica con questo film l’implosione naturale: qui non c’è la classica parabola di ascesa e caduta del boss criminale, databile fin dai tempi di Piccolo Cesare, poiché Il traditore inizia già dalla cattura di Buscetta e non ripercorre a ritroso la sua fama. Cosa Nostra è finita, afferma Buscetta, e adesso bisogna parlare: “Dì le cose”, intima il boss, e Bellocchio racconta quel “teatro psicologico” che è il crimine organizzato, fatto di riti tribali e di brutalità ferina, ma anche un’Italia connivente che non garantisce protezione o lavoro e copre le sue mancanze con la retorica del Và pensiero.
Uno Stato criminalmente assente che Bellocchio mette allo specchio con sarcasmo – lui che conosce bene la differenza fra sarcasmo e ironia – aggiungendo qua e là una pennellata pittorica (Buscetta come un Cristo del Mantegna) e una metafisica (Don Masino in bicicletta lungo il corridoio): tocchi d’autore, zampate di una tigre che (per fortuna) è ancora fuori dalla gabbia.
